Selig's original name was Pittischevitz. Selig first married a daughter of Leo Rosenberg and had 8 children. We don't know the first wife's name. All the children from the first marriage use the surname Pittischevitz and emigrated to Israel. The oldest son of Selig and his first wife was a chief rabbi in Palestine. After his first wife died, it was the Jewish tradition to marry the unmarried sister of your wife, so he then married Fannie Rosenberg and had 7 children with her.

Selig was also known as Samuel and Zylick and was a blacksmith. On the 1910 census he is listed as a grocer.

Each census year gives a different date of immigration for Selig. It may have been as early as 1887 or nearer to 1892. I have yet to find the ship manifest record for him. He became a naturalized citizen in Chicago on October 30, 1900.

In the 1930 census he is living with son Morris in Chicago and is listed as Zylick. Fannie had died in 1925.
